Superuglymixes 010 : Madame Excuse

Madame Excuse is an experienced record digger and dj. She’s been at it for quite sometime having in her younger years had a residency in Pacha of Mallorca. Having grown tired of the commercial world of djing she has since focused her time and efforts doing what she loves searching the world for Hot sexy disco records. Based in Madrid she is by far one of the most interesting and fun dj’s to catch on a night out. Her and her crew DJ Gela, Rafa Roque and her Internet radiostation 39 Herzios, were one of the best things I found while I was living there. If you visit Madrid keep an eye out for her you will be so happy you did.

Superuglymixes 009: Aji

AJI

This mix was prepared for us by our dear friend AJI. He escaped from a small city in Alabama to share with us his visions of a haunted dancehall. Dusty acid raves bleeding through from a dimension that was once our own but has since ceased to exist on our plane. Waves of atmospherics drenched in reverb act as the spectre in the room while the 4/4 keep us grounded and our brains dancing. Both a producer and dj, you can check the link below to hear some of his equally psychedelic productions.

Superuglymixes 008: Tropical Jeremy

zhongya$51315913

You might think you are in familiar territory. Some records fall in line with what some might call rare groove. You might here a soul record you know, a little Pfunk maybe even some Billy Ocean. You might feel within your comfort zone, assuming he’s just playing one offs of his record collection. And you could go on thinking that and totally enjoy every magical night at his monthly “Its a Tropical World party” in Brooklyn.  But you would  be terribly wrong.

And thats ok. But Tropical Jeremy pays homage to a different time and place. Italy during the early 70s to be exact but it shares an evolutionary path internationally within the art of djing. Before the commercial availability of the crossfader, a DJ was more of a selector, song choice was everything and a crowd was eager, ready for eclectic sounds from unknown parts of the world. On his website Tropicalcomputersystems.com you can read an interview with Beppe Loda, one of the many djs from that era. He describes djing back then as an “artless” experience, the absence of ego and without the need to entertain with innovative tricks. Nothing but the hits. Far from what we see now a days, where mp3s stored on hard-drives can be made to match, warble and glitch-out at the push of a button. The music was the part of the architecture in the nightclub and fetishization of it all didn’t distract from what clubgoers came to do; Let loose and maybe find a friend to spend the weekend.

He has been a mainstay in Brooklyns dance music scene for 15 years now. I managed to catch him for the first time at Tandem a few years back but you might have seen him at Zebulon, Kinfolk and now at his own party “Its a Tropical World” at Sisters in Downtown Brooklyn. He gave us a beautiful mix recorded live from one his parties. Displaying dance music from a wide range of sources; Africa to Turkey to New York and back again. People are still people, and a dancefloor with a cabaret license will still draw a crowd.  But we’ve come a long way baby and I feel very fortunate to be in an age where you can get it all in one sleepless night.

Superuglymixes 007 : Porkchop

Porkchop aka SSPS aka Jon Nicholson of the band Excepter, it suffices to say, is a pretty well known figure. Having observed the dynamic within the Brooklyn artist community over the past 3 years, I found that Porkchop has been a tremendous influence and I would even say, has been a tastemaker, changing the landscape for collectors and djs alike. He has been a catalyst for change, introducing punks to dance with his residency at the Chicken Hut and punk to the weekend dancers in his current monthly party “Particularly Random” at Tandem bar. Originally from Chicago, he incorporates tracks to his mixes that very often have been previously unheard here in New York, all exhibiting a kind of raw quality that has become his signature sound. His productions can be found on record labels…L.I.E.S and Nation under the name SSPS. He is a busy man, but we are proud to say that after some persistence we were able to track him down for a mix. We are deeply honored.

We met this guy digging in the dirt over at The Thing in Greenpoint. He’s based in Montreal and it turns out that this guy mixes some pretty out there stuff and definitely seems to not want to be pinned down to any particular genre or label which makes things challenging and we love challenging. We asked him for a mix, he obliged and we could tell he definitely put some love into it. No track listing so chill out and just let it soak in. Follow him on soundcloud and facebook as he likes to post dug up tracks he’s found which is always nice to have on your feed.
